MethaneSAT, a satellite built by the Environmental Defense Fund specifically to detect and quantify methane emissions at regional scale and make the data freely public, suffered an on orbit anomaly and lost communication with mission control on 20 June 2025. Operators made nearly 400 attempts to reestablish contact over the following 21 days without success, and on 1 July EDF confirmed the satellite had lost power and was likely not recoverable. The subsequent anomaly investigation attributed the failure to a single event affecting either the flight avionics unit or the electrical power subsystem. MethaneSAT had launched in March 2024 and operated for roughly fifteen months.

A single satellite loss after fifteen months of operation is a concrete reminder that any specific monitoring asset has real failure risk, and that verification claims resting on one satellite or one provider carry more fragility than the underwriting language usually acknowledges.

This sits alongside, not against, the broader trend of Europe rebuilding its Sentinel constellation the same year, the two stories together say verification capacity overall is expanding, but any single mission remains a point of failure worth diligencing specifically, not assuming as a given.

Development Implication

Diligence teams relying on a specific satellite mission's data for a multi year monitoring commitment should confirm what happens to that commitment if the mission ends early, redundancy and data continuity plans matter as much as the mission's stated capability.
